Witness to history being created....

 Fall of the Soviet Union - 1991.

Let me share some of the pictures of the fall of the mighty Soviet Union. The pro-democracy fever swept across a country with eleven time zones and led to the creation of many countries that were non-existent till them and were a part of the great Union of Soviet Socialistic Republics (USSR).

Hundreds of thousands of protesters pack Moscow's Manezh Square next to the Kremlin, on March 10, 1991, demanding that Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev and his fellow Communists give up power. The crowd, estimated at 500,000, was the biggest anti-government demonstration in the 73 years of since the Communists took power, and came a week before the nationwide referendum on Gorbachev's union treaty. Scenes like this were a common sight all over the USSR with empty stores fuelliing the peoples's anger against the ruling regime of the day and the communist ideals. Large ques for even basic food items like bread and milk were the norm of the day. People were moving from pillar to post in search of basic day-to-day requirements.

Troops were called in. But angry protestors took on the might of the Soviet army. In this picture, aprotestor is seen mounting a tank infront of the White House. The grand building of Moscow State University looms in the background.

 Finally, victory to the peaceful protestors. The birth of democratic Russia. Pictures of the crowd at the Manezh Square near the Kremlin. The St. Basil's cathedral can be seen in the background.

Crowds celebrating their hard fought victory. Below, is the statue of the founder of KGB which the people brought down immediately after their victory. For years, this statute was a landmark monument near the Dyetsky Mir (Children's World) store.
